The Philadelphia Eagles needed a win in the worst way on Sunday afternoon. While the reigning Super Bowl champions entered their matchup against the Oakland Raiders with an 8-5 record and firm control of the NFC East, they were undoubtedly trending in the wrong direction.
Following three consecutive uninspiring offensive performances, Philadelphia experienced a concerning three-game losing streak and didn’t appear able to flip the script, despite preparing to face an inferior opponent.
To Nick Sirianni and the Eagles’ credit, though, they responded well to their late-season adversity and played a near-perfect game vs. the lowly 2-12 Raiders.
Hurts completed 12 of his 15 passes for 175 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in the Eagles’ dominant 31-0 home victory. However, it’s pivotal not to overreact to one exceptional outing, especially given the fact that Philadelphia has looked lackluster all year.
Are the Eagles really back in business as the playoffs inch closer?
Given the status of Philadelphia’s most recent opponent, it’s challenging to declare that the franchise is on the right track with three regular-season contests remaining.
The Eagles have struggled mightily against playoff-caliber defenses this season due to their predictable playcalling, inconsistent running game, lack of explosive plays downfield, and a declining offensive line, and Hurts’ unassertiveness in the pocket.
It also doesn’t help that star wide receiver AJ Brown hasn’t been on the same page with Hurts for most of the season and has adopted a diva-like persona in many individuals’ eyes.
The Eagles currently rank 18th in points per game (22.9), 19th in rushing yards per game (115.6), 22nd in passing yards per game (199.3), and 22nd in total yards per game (314.9), proving that their offense is far from the most dominant unit in the league.
That said, there’s hope that Philadelphia can build on its successful get-right game and make the necessary tweaks to make life easier for Hurts and company moving forward to avoid an early playoff exit.
